Welcoming Baby Brayden

Debbie's daughter is expecting a baby boy, so she ordered a couple burp cloths for him:
When she contacted me about the order she shared what bedding set her daughter was registered for:
I immediately thought of the Riley Blake striped fabric I had and some turtle embroidery designs. After sharing a few links we settled on Lynnie Pinnie's Applique Turtle. Before getting started I took the fabric to church and she brought me a blanket from the bedding set -- you would not believe how PERFECTLY the RB stripe matches this set! I was so giddy!
I spent a couple days trying to decide how to use the stripe fabric. One idea was easy peasy; I just reused the embroidery file from a Brayden burp cloth I made last fall but used the stripe instead. The "B" is from Embroidery Boutique's Fun Applique Alphabet, and I added the name with Whoa Nelly From 8 Claws and a Paw.
For the turtle burp cloth I really didn't want to use the stripe on the actual turtle, so I decided to use fabric on the end of the burp cloth instead of my traditional piece of ribbon. Ummmmm.... confession time, I think I've only done that once before and it was in 2007! So I was going to have to suck it up and ask for assistance on construction method... but before having to do so Charming Station posted this video tutorial! Yay for perfect timing! It worked pretty well. The major thing I did different was tucking the ends under on the back side instead of the front side. I also used some steam-a-seam on the front before stitching so it wouldn't shift -- I didn't want those stripes to be really wonky. I should have used my walking foot... I'll remember that next time. It turned out so cute!

My worst stitchout ever, and how I fixed it

So I'm about a month shy of having blogged for five years. And I have blogged about virtually every sewing project I have done in that time. I guess that's why I feel compelled to document my disastrous night of sewing last night. And I wish that I could tell the tale, you notice today's date and think "April Fools!" But alas, this is true.

I was working on my daughter's birthday shirt. It's a pretty involved design (9 different applique pieces) and we had already spent a lot of time picking fabrics and thread colors for each and every element -- it matches a cute pair of plaid shorts we found. I picked a big design and use the 6x10 hoop on my Brother. I got all fabrics tacked down and it looked lovely! But then once the satin stitches got going... puckering, and I mean MAJOR puckering started to occur. I probably should have stopped, but I decided to trudge on, hoping I could just press it out later. Clearly I need to work on my hooping technique with this larger hoop... the method I use flawlessly with my Janome hoops did not work in this case. As things continued the stabilizer was less and less taut.
THEN midway through a thread nest. WHY?? I have no idea, but I had to jiggle the hoop quite a bit to get it loose from the machine and trim all that excess thread away. The stabilizer was very loose now. I tried my best to tighten the stabilizer back up, but the design had shifted. I carried on, skipping a few sections to come back to later, and finished the design.
After some sleep and a fresh attitude, I worked on it again this afternoon. On the backside I trimmed out all of the polymesh stabilizer between all the elements, and then pressed the shirt to death. It's still puckery, but looks better than last night. Since that was semi-successful I decided to try to fix the part of the design I skipped over last night.

AND this is why I'm writing about it, maybe the following tip will be beneficial to those of you who do applique work, if you ever find yourself in this predicament.

As I started to stitch the satin stitches around this party hat, it was obvious that it wasn't going to line up with the fabric at all!
Sometimes when this happens I'm able to use the arrow keys on my machine to move the needle to the left or right to force it to line up, but this design completely filled the width of the hoop and I couldn't use that technique. So I stopped stitching, jumped ahead to a different part of the design (where the alignment wasn't as far off) and finished it out.

To fix the hat, first I picked out all of those misplaced zigzag stitches. Then I ran back to Embird and separated out that hat from the rest of the design (placement, satin stitches and decorative top). I centered that in my small hoop, saved it as new file and headed back to my machine. I hooped sticky stabilizer and stitched the placement stitch:
Then I laid my shirt directly on top of that lining up the fabric hat that was already tacked down with the placement stitches on the stabilizer. I redid the satin stitches and accent on top, and voila! The hat looks like it's supposed to!
So I'm pretty pleased with that little save. :)

This afternoon I showed the shirt to my daughter and she couldn't see what was wrong with it (even though the puckering is glaring in my opinion). My husband pointed out that it will be on a moving kid and will likely get smeared icing or spilled punch on it. So we are making this work. I wouldn't sell it or give it away, but thankfully my daughter is gracious enough to love it anyway.

And when I'm in a better mood (hopefully by her birthday next week) I'll share pictures of the entire shirt. Stay tuned.

Maddox is Two!

Maddox turned two and his mommy asked me to make a birthday shirt for him. Now, for those of you who know Katie, that might come as a surprise -- she is an EXCELLENT seamstress, and has an embroidery machine of her own! But for now she's limited to a 4x4" field and wanted a bigger design for his birthday shirt. I was happy to oblige!

Although can I admit that it's a bit intimidating to do embroidery for someone who does it herself? I think this was a first for me! (Well, I have made stuff for Maddox and his baby sister before, but I didn't know at that time that Katie had an embroidery machine, too.) She knows what to look for in a good stitch out, I felt extra pressure to do my best! :)
Katie wanted a candle number with his name, so I suggested the same combo I used last year for Grant, the Applique Birthday Candle Numbers and Whoa Nelly both from 8 Claws and a Paw. Katie supplied the shirt and fabric, so this was pretty quick to make!
Poor little Maddox ended up being pretty sick on his birthday :( but he's feeling better now and I saw him wearing his shirt tonight at church. Such a cutie!

Future World's Strongest Woman

Brittany's husband is a contestant in a strongman competition this weekend, and she wanted something special for her daughter to wear. She requested the text, "Future World's Strongest Woman." Now, I could have just used one of my Embird alphabets to type out the text and stitch away, but of course I didn't take the easy route. :) Even though I haven't purchased or stitched a single one, I love all the text embroidery designs that have become popular recently, so I tried my hand at using multiple fonts from 8 Claws and a Paw to create a typography-like design and I love the results!
"Future" is the Diner font. I used an envelope in Embird to give it it's shape. "World's" and "Woman" are the Alexis font -- I wanted them to look elegant. "Strongest" is the Cinderella font -- I wanted it to be bold but not boring.
I hope Dave does well. But whatever the outcome, his daughter is certain to have the world's cutest shirt. ;)

Kendal is One!

Kendal is turning one, and is blessed to have TWO celebrations coming up! The one this weekend is a luau theme. As soon as I heard that I showed her mommy the onesie I made Lucy last year, and we decided to use that same design, just change a few colors:
I used my fave Chubby Wubby Applique Numbers from GG Designs and merged the hibiscus from Planet Applique's Tiki Alphabet on top of the "1". I added the text with Embird Alphabet #8.

Riley is One!

First, let's start with the birthday girl, and then we'll discuss her shirt :)
Isn't she precious?!?
Michelle and I had already been discussing what to do for Riley's first birthday onesie, pretty sure we were going to go with an owl theme. Facebook then played a huge role in the production process. I commented on Savvy Stitches' photo, and Michelle noticed that, checked out the picture and immediately sent me a message saying she wanted a design just like it. I had never seen that particular owl before, but I knew Sheila (another one of those "friends I've never met") was starting to digitize herself and it just might be hers. So I sent her a message asking about it. She replied immediately that she was already planning on asking me to test the design for her since she knew I had a thing for owls. WOW talk about a collision of perfectly timed events. :)
Michelle ordered the onesie and skirt from Old Navy and then I got to work. I first of all tested the whole design on a bib, it stitched perfectly, and then I moved onto the onesie.
I used Embird Alphabet #8 for "Look whooo's". The "1" is from Chubby Wubby Applique Numbers from GG Designs, and I used the Chez font from 8 Claws and a Paw for her name.
Now, the applique owl design is not yet available. Sheila is busy getting all of her ducks in a row before launching a site (probably this summer). So hang on, it will be available before you know it. Until then, you can become a fan of Savvy Stitches Applique on Facebook. Thanks Sheila for letting me be a tester so I could create this cute shirt for Riley!

Jada is One!

Eureka asked me to make a first birthday onesie for Jada and I was delighted to do it! The party was a pink and zebra theme... this went with a hot pink pettiskirt. :) And bonus, I just happened to have a black onesie in the correct size in my stash! Woo-hoo! Love it when that happens. It's a Monag brand bodysuit, so I'm sure I have my MIL Kathy to thank for that. :)
The "1" is from Chubby Wubby Applique Numbers from GG Designs, and I used Miss Kitty from 8 Claws and a Paw for her name.
Here's Jada all decked out for her party, check out that precious headband and pettiskirt! What a cute ensemble!

Recent Monogramming

Here are a few random items that I simply added a monogram to. First up, some lovely bibs that my friend got as a baby shower gift -- they just needed a little G on them, easy peasy, right? Well... except that capital Gs often look WEIRD, so it took a while to decide what I wanted to use!
The paisley bib is so lovely that I went with a more scripty fancy G. I used Stella from 8 Claws and a Paw.
For the striped bib I decided to go with a more traditional looking G, but one that is whimsical. This is Pizazz from 8CP.
I stitched this H (Brass from 8CP) on this little zipper bag. Can you see it??? I did such a fantastic job picking a font that fit the motif and matched the thread so well that it just blends right in! :)

And finally I monogrammed these little kitty blankies. My friend's daughter has one that she ADORES and must have with her at all times. Her mommy was SMART and bought a couple extras to add into the rotation, that way little Kendal is never without one. :) I used Embird Alphabet #17 to match the original blanket monogrammed in Curlz.
On it's own, the curlz font is very thin, and I was afraid it would get lost in this super soft fabric. So I finally had the bright idea to increase the pull compensation on an Embird alphabet -- WOW I wish I had thought to try that years ago!

Dino-mite Birthday Shirt

Sue requested a birthday shirt for her grandson, suggesting a dinosaur holding a "3". I immediately thought of Original Stitches' Apatosaurus design and ran to her site. She only had the "1" design listed, so I asked on her Facebook page if she had plans to do additional numbers. She quickly responded that she'd be happy to do the 3 design, and within a couple days had a design ready for me before I was even ready to stitch it! It turned out so cute!! Thanks again, Erin!
Here's the link to her #3 design. Go check out her stitch out picture -- it looks so cute with girly pastels! It's amazing how fabric choices can completely change the look of an applique design. I LOVE APPLIQUE! :)
I added "JIMMIE-REX" with Embird Alphabet #8.
